Coffee Sizes

I finally know the truth about coffee cup sizes at coffee shops. I ordered a large coffee at Fairport Village Coffee and the man handed me a huge coffee. Upon inquiring about the size, I asked if grande didn’t just mean “large” in Spanish (and probably a few other romance languages). He said, “yes.” He then went on to explain that the sizes regular, grande and supreme are there to make people feel good about paying an extra 30 cents for a bigger cup of coffee. “And hey, Starbucks does it,” was his concluding statement. I have always suspected this but have never actually verified it from a coffee shop owner!

I declined the supreme and went with the grande… which in English apparently means “medium.”
